Saturday
13th September & Sunday 14th September, 2014…..
Friday
we took the train from Paris to Brugge….the Metro is great in Paris and we
certainly made good use of it but getting out of the Metro and onto the main
lines out of Paris, what a nightmare, even the locals were confused……eventually
we managed to find our train from Paris to Brussels and then we had to change
trains to get to Brugge….the latter was easy, it was just getting out of that
Paris Nord station where the Metro and the trains out of Paris come
together…..and then finding our hotel in Brugge…..we must have asked 6 people
who all sent us in different directions…I was carrying my back pack which
doesn’t seem to have got any lighter but Michael has had to buy a pull along
bag as his shoulder is too painful to carry his
backpack……once we found the hotel we realised how we had gone around in circles
but the guy at reception in the hotel said
even the police get the hotel address wrong so I was pleased to think that it
is not just us that are dummies!!!! And
so it has been a busy weekend in Brugge, in fact I think half Europe has come
here this weekend…..they had an open day on historical buildings yesterday and
it was struggle to get down the footpaths as they are so narrow…..this place is
bike crazy, they are everywhere so what with dodging the bikes, the horses and
carts (and there are so many of them too), the cars and just people, people and
more people, one took life rather slowly……a bit cooler here but still fine and
pleasant for just walking and walking…..the cathedral here looks like nothing
much from the outside but inside the stained glass windows are magnificient and
the mother and child statue is some of Michael Angelo’s work….we took a bus
tour around the city yesterday which was very interesting, as it is impossible
to walk all the areas of interest and we had ear phones to explain the points
of interest….. I took a boat trip today which I really enjoyed as it gave you a
totally different perspective of Brugge from the water….. the architecture here
and the preservation of the old buildings is really quite amazing….cafes, every
second shop is a café not to mention the chocolate shops….we went to a concert
in the main square last night, bell ringing with music but it was a bit
repetitive but it was nice to sit outside in the square…all very European and
this morning we found another square to sit in and listen to the music…we
presume the local brass band and their music was very enjoyable….. tomorrow we
take the train to Amsterdam and then we have to find the port for our boat to
begin our 14 day cruise….Yeh, 14 nights in the same bed…M & F.

Looks lovely. Many years since we were there. Canal boats look exciting. Very pretty.
