Thursday 3rd July,
2014……transfer this morning from Sun City to Joberg….we learned that Sun City
built in 1974 for the Casino as gambling illegal in South Africa then, thus the
distance out of Joberg then in 1994 when gambling legalised they expanded the
place to what it is today…the Vegas of South Africa…..leaving Sun City the area is very dry in fact some areas
reminded us of the Serengeti….tribal lands and nothing much happening…shanty
towns and villages and every stop sign had someone selling something and they
were standing in the middle of the road…all our car doors locked….the moment
you move in a car here you lock the car doors….our driver took us back to
Joberg via the back roads so it was more interesting than the motorways…and
still our journey took about 2 ½ hours….lots of burned grass areas which I
asked if they were controlled burn offs but apparently the locals just light
fires anywhere here…very little policing of things so it seems here and so much corruption but what we have noticed
most of all is that the people are not very friendly…nothing like the
friendliness of the countries we have been in so far…..our driver told us of
all the security he has to have to live with
here and on this road last week they decided to burn a Coco Cola truck
and he had to turn back and find another route to Joberg….he volunteered this
info when we remarked about some of the pot holes in the road but he said
people are always lighting fires….we passed the Lonmin Mine and the area where
all those miners were shot in 2011…remember, they repeatedly showed that on
TV…I can still remember it….very sad and to see all the tin shacks the people
still live in outside the fenced area of the mine….then we drove by a big
reservoir area where all the sewerage from Joberg is being processed and then
used for irrigation….but the flash homes built on the land overlooking the
reservoir blew us away…the driver said the area is smelly too but the rich
choose to live here and overlook the water (we didn’t put the car window down
to check it out though)…..interesting village in that area though and there
were some very nice homes and guest houses….lots of sunflowers being grown and
a Pukekohe vege type area too but all with irrigation as it really is very dry
here….the usual markets on the road side which are illegal here but people
still do it….the suberb of Sandton that our hotel is in in Joberg not too
bad….1 star hotel…shoe box but clean….then we walked to the local shops…went to
a bank to change money and oh the security…we ended up in a cubicle, so hot,
and so many papers to sign all to change a bit of $US cash…went to a
supermarket to buy supplies….food seems reasonably priced…they say to get taxi
to go out for dinner tonight so we have bought food to stay in…it will be
dinner tonight and breki in the morning in our room…down to the basics now….it
was a typical shopping mall we went to and all the locals seemed to be going
about things normally without big security worries….tomorrow morning we are
doing a tour of Soweto before we leave on safari on the 5th July at
6.30 am….M & F.
Sounds a bit scary. Enjoy your next safari. All's good here. Still cold and wet. Went to Ramblers lunch at the Whangamata Club. A good turn out

This is so frustrating. The number of comments I have made that go no where. Loving the blog I almost feel I am with you. Terrific. Keeping this short in case in disappears again. Love to you both.
ReplyDeleteYeh at long last. Glad to see you smiling now after your rough start. Hopefully you get to see all the animals you want to on these next safaris . You are getting a wonderful glimpse of life in Africa, unbelievable to see it. Hope you get good news on Saturday that everything goes ahead as planned. Love to you both
